The Government has published a new Bill which grants two weeks’ paid leave to parents who lose a child under the age of 18.
Under the current rules, employees have a day-one right to take a “reasonable” amount of unpaid time off work to deal with an emergency involving a dependant. This includes making arrangements following the death of a dependant. What is considered “reasonable” depends on the circumstances, and the amount of leave granted is at the employer’s discretion. The Parental Bereavement (Leave and Pay) Bill entitles all employees, regardless of service length, to the proposed statutory minimum.
Employees with continuous service of 26 weeks or more will also be entitled to statutory parental bereavement pay.
A second reading of the Bill was schedule for 20th October. Once the content is agreed, it is expected to come into law some time in 2020.
